Transport

Train

The Greens believe that effective transport infrastructure is integral to our environmental, social and economic wellbeing.

Climate change, the decline in cheap oil supplies and decades of neglect mean a major upgrade in public transport, investment in on-road freight infrastructure and conversion to renewable energy sources are urgent priorities.

The Greens will:

  • Remove the GST from public transport
  • Reform the national transport plan and shift funding from road to rail
  • Enact stringent fuel efficiency standards for new petrol and diesel cars
  • Promote alternative fuels
  • Abolish Fringe Benefits Tax concessions for company and leased cars
  • Promote local manufacturing to reduce our reliance on imported goods
  • Upgrade our urban public transport and rail freight infrastructure
  • Increase the tariff on imported four-wheel drives from 5% to 10% except for primary producers.
