A discussion about public housing in Victoria, why it’s so important for us to fight for it (right now), and how we’re going to show our support for the Barak Beacon residents.
“I went into shock when I opened the letter. I’ve lived in the Barak Beacon housing community for 25 years, and now the government is trying to force me out. It was 12 days before Christmas.

This little area is my world. It’s where I raised my son and was the first time I felt like I’d found a place I could stay forever.

My neighbours have lived here for generations. I’ve known their children since they were babies. This isn’t like anywhere else I’ve lived in Melbourne. I won’t leave without a fight.”
– Margaret Kelly, Barak Beacon resident

The Victorian Government is trying to evict Margaret from her public housing.

Margaret is a disability support pensioner who will be evicted from her home of 25 years, but the Victorian Labor Government doesn't seem to care. They’d rather offer property developers prime land with bay views instead of supporting Victorians in need.

Margaret will lose not just her home but the security that public housing once offered.

Margaret’s story unfortunately isn't unique. There is a massive housing crisis, and rather than help people, Labor is actively making the situation worse: from chronically underfunding and privatising public housing to prioritising the profits of property developers, rather than ensure everyone has a secure place to call home.

Barak Beacon represents the next flashpoint in the ongoing fight to protect our public housing communities from privatisation.

In this snap briefing, Samantha Ratnam, Leader of the Victorian Greens, and MP for Southern Metro Katherine Copsey will outline how we can take action as a community and push back on the government’s privatisation of public homes.

We're getting together to have the public housing conversation this government SHOULD be having, and we'd love to see you there.

This event starts at 6.30pm AEST.
