Uranium - WA does not dig it!
Delegates attending the fourth annual uranium roadshow in Fremantle tomorrow will be reminded that “WA does not dig uranium!’
Long-term anti-nuclear campaigner and new Australian Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam has criticised organisers for their lack of balance debate at the conference, touted as ‘the most important event to be held for the uranium industry’.
“The Carpenter Government made a sound decision to rule out mining uranium in the state. Concerned locals will be there to remind investors that WA is not buying, selling, digging or dumping,” Senator Ludlam said.
“While event organisers claim that ‘interest in uranium stocks is at an all time high’ it seems that Wall Street has yet to be sold on new nuclear investments.”
“Credit rating agency Moodys raised questions regarding industry cost estimates and schedules for bringing the next nuclear reactors on line stating that ‘many of the current expectations regarding new nuclear generation are overly ambitious’.”
“Meanwhile uranium prices are down - currently at US$60 per pound, less than half the April 2007 value - and Goldman Sachs JBWere indicated that uranium is tipped to drop under US$50 per pound by 2010,” Senator Ludlam concluded.
Senator Ludlam, who participated in protests at the conference in previous years, is disappointed he cannot attend but has wished the WA Anti-Nuclear Alliance and the Fremantle Anti-Nuclear Group well in their efforts tomorrow.
