The Australian Greens believe that everyone has a right to timely, high-quality health care, regardless of their income. The fairest and most efficient way to achieve this is through the public health system. The Greens have developed a $4.5 billion health plan that builds on Medicare.
Primary Health Care Reform
The Australian Greens have endorsed the widespread call by health professionals and economists for significant reform of the health sector. We will allocate $50 million for public health research, planning and infrastructure, including a National Health Reform Council to conduct the health system review, including financing arrangements with a view to establishing a joint funding mechanism. The council will also develop a National Primary Health Strategy that will emphasise health promotion and illness prevention, improve community involvement, and improve integration in primary care.

Greens welcome release of Close the Gap targets
The Australian Greens today welcomed the release of the Close the Gap: National Indigenous Health Targets.
"The targets set out a path for Australian Governments to achieve their stated goal of closing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander life expectancy gap within a generation," said Senator Rachel Siewert today.

"While recent data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare clearly show that there has been no recent spike in binge-drinking among Australian youth, the alcopop industry shouldn't be too quick to claim that the statistics show all is well with Australia's youth drinking culture," said Senator Rachel Siewert today.
